Alcolea del Rio is the first community-owned solar pv project in Spain. The project is close to Sevilla and one of the first realizations of Generation kWh, an innovative financing scheme developed by Som Energia. Its members provided zero-interest loans and in return they get access to clean energy at cost price. Despite the lack of subsidies or feed-in-premiums the local cooperative decided to proceed because of its environmental and societal value. The project has been operational since 2016 and generated enough electricity to cover the needs of about 1,300 families.
